Loma Theater Bookstar

Location: San Diego, CA
Client: Bookstop, Inc.
Completion Date: 1990
Project Size: 10,000 SF

The 1939 Point Loma Theater was rescued from the wrecking ball and the confrontation between preservation and development was mediated by the inspired leadership of a discount bookstore company form Austin, Texas. The theaters adaptive reuse capitalized on the existing theaters circulation path including the recreation of the historic axminister carpet, and was augmented by imagery drawn from the existing deco architecture, marine nature of San Diego and literary references.   The rescued Loma Theater provided the financial backbone for additional planned retail space to be built on adjoin property.
