As the Henry B Gonzalez Convention Center undergoes dramatic reconfiguration and renovation, much of the building footprint to the west of the river extension will be demolished, leaving a previously developed site exceeding 13 acres in the heart of downtown San Antonio. The Hemisfair Park Area Redevelopment Corp. has targeted this zone as an invaluable opportunity to develop a world class amenity for our City by repurposing this area as a Civic Park.
The new park aspires to be San Antonio’s new “front porch” and will provide unique programmatic elements and offer new additions to the city’s repertoire of public space. Lush gardens, groves, and water features will be intricately woven among a celebratory promenade, urban marketplace, and vast urban lawn. Development sites surrounding Civic Park have been land-banked to work symbiotically in the creation of a distinctive public/private partnership development model that will increase land values and fund maintenance of the park in perpetuity.
The project is sited at a critical interface of the future LEED ND (‘Neighborhood Development’) Hemisfair district with downtown San Antonio and will serve as the focal piece of a dramatic change in our urban landscape. Alamo Architects’ work in conjunction with internationally known landscape architecture firm Gustafson, Guthrie, Nichols of Seattle is to drive the design of the park and create a framework for public/private partnership development.
Completion of the park is scheduled to coincide with the City’s Tri-Centennial in 2018.
