The NRP Group, a national affordable housing developer, approached Alamo
Architects to develop strategies to help their developments blend seamlessly
into the communities in which they are built, while respecting the strict
economic formula to which these projects must conform. Costa Tarragona,
a 252-unit community in Corpus Christi, on the Texas Gulf Coast, responds
to its context through roof contours, massing, materials, scale and color,
demonstrating the adaptability of the housing lines we have helped NRP
to develop.
At Costa Tarragona, a new building type was designed to add variety to the standard set of units and a color palette of pastels was developed to mimic the classic, sun-drenched hues of Gulf beach communities. Buildings were sited to create the casual feel of a coastal village, and to maximize views. The landscape is liberally sprinkled with palms, bougainvillea, and other tropical plants that thrive in the region, helping to reinforce a sense of place.
