A new 4,800-square-feet Student Center on the east side of Our Lady of the
Lake University gave our team the opportunity to return to the rich historical
context of this landmark site. Designed to complement the architectural style
prevalent in the older buildings, the Student Center incorporates a palette
of materials and details that draws on the existing buildings of the main
campus and the new Archbishop Patrick F. Flores Residence Hall next door,
also designed by Alamo Architects.
The original campus was designed by noted San Antonio architect Leo M. J.
Diehlmann in the neo-gothic collegiate style. Beige face brick, stone details,
and steep pitched metal roofs relate the massing to the original buildings
and the lower buildings nearby. Glazed brick accents were added throughout
the building to distinguish the Student Center as a contemporary interpretation
of existing campus vocabulary.
