Mission Academy

When the San Antonio Independent School District decided to build its first brand new school from the ground up in more than 40 years, they chose to entrust Alamo Architects with the project. We worked with the district to develop a forward-looking plan for the 19.5 acre site, accommodating 750 pre-kindergarten through 8th grade students in one facility.

To meld the new architecture comfortably into its historic context, we trusted the notion that “what’s old is new.” The school’s character draws inspiration from nearby historic Spanish missions in the form of masonry detailing, festively colored stucco and ceramic tile.  An enclosed courtyard, reminiscent of the mission grounds, will be used for outdoor classroom activities. In the tradition of the early mission acequias and aqueducts, the building design will incorporate a rainwater collection system to irrigate the school grounds.

The 140,000 SF, $17.75M facility will open for the 2008-2009 school year.
