Fire Station No. 48 is located on the east side of Bulverde Road approximately
1 mile north of Loop 1604. At the rear of the site is an abandoned quarry.
Nearby are private houses and developing communities, as well as retail and
commercial ventures along Loop 1604.
This project is a three-bay fire station with office and dormitory facilities
for the City of San Antonio Fire Department. The building, approximately 11,750
square feet, sits on a large (3.6 acre) lot. Clearances, turning radii, and
fire truck loads dictate the general site layout and extent of concrete pavement.
Native landscaping complements the existing vegetation and natural landscape
features mitigate the required environmental concerns of construction over
the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone.
The exterior facade reflects the division of functions within:
The architectural elements feature sloping roofs that identify the office
area and the apparatus room. Each component is distinguished by a large pylon
element that announces the fire station with signage and identification.
The exterior wall material is a combination of stonework, metal panels and
glazing compatible with the area and region. Fire Station No. 48 was featured
in the July/August 2006 Texas Architect story, “New
Trends in Walls and Ceilings.”
