Fire Station No. 20

Fire Station No. 20 is located along a heavily-trafficked suburban commercial strip in southeast San Antonio at the intersection of South W.W. White Road and Redhaven Drive. The fire station includes offices, dormitories, living spaces and an apparatus room for the City of San Antonio Fire Department.

The building is approximately 10,839 square feet and sits on a narrow lot. Clearances, turning radii and fire truck loads dictate the setbacks and extent of concrete pavement. A formal planting area was introduced along W.W. White Road, while native grasses and planting materials form a buffer between the fire station and residences to the west.

The exterior facade reflects the division of functions within:

  • public office area
  • private dormitories and living area, and
  • garage-like apparatus room.

Separate curved metal roofs admit light through clerestories into interior spaces. The exterior wall material is masonry units, glazed tile and composite metal panels. A metal canopy and steel frame structure mark the public entry. A complementary structural canopy is used to help mitigate the sun and glare on the west side of the building and to create shaded exterior spaces. With its curved roof forms and metal materials, the structure reflects the streamlined mechanization of the fire engines housed within.
