Chavela joined Alamo Architects in 1999, and holds degrees in architecture and engineering from the University of Texas, Austin. He was senior design manager for The Shops at La Cantera and the new Neiman Marcus flagship store in Austin, and has a demonstrated affinity for retail design. Just prior to joining Alamo Architects, Ariel worked in Mexico City, after a two year stay at the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Genoa, Italy.
