The Tino and Millie Duran Welcome Center was designed to be the new front door for San Antonio College. Located on the first floor of a new Public-Private housing development it, helps activate the street level and presents a colorful, striking image to new and existing students.

Two functions happen within the Center; the first, a technology store where students can come to purchase new technology and get advice and consulting from trained personnel and second, a counseling area where students can receive guidance on admissions and curriculum. The counseling area features an open main room, family seating area, and private consultation rooms, the center accommodates the unique needs of all San Antonio College students.

The six “Blue Lanterns” suspended from the concrete deck above, highlight the six pillars of educational focus that students can pursue. The “Rotating Wall” with its off-center pivot, transforms the Tech Store and Welcome Center into one seamless room. Polished concrete floors expose the aggregate below the surface creating a refined look from the existing
structural slab.

The curved steel “Interactive Wall” provides the staff and students a way to engage with digital media in a creative and productive way. Through the integration of technology throughout the space, the center acknowledges the expanding role of which technology now plays in education.

The Center was featured in a Rivard Report article (click).
