Not just a collection of classrooms, Columbia Heights transcends schoolhouse stereotypes with its respect for the community and its residents. Subtle references to a neighboring 1950’s elementary school make it a harmonious addition to the community, and put forth the idea of a more modern, “grown-up” education center for adults. Lighthearted images including computer-patterned glazed brick and a hovering, treelike green roof make the building inviting, welcoming place.  A clerestory inside illuminates and enlivens a central gathering space, creating spatial interest. On the exterior, a mural, created by children in the area, is easily accommodated and helps make the building a part of the community.
